About Bangkok Bus Lines
Bangkok Bus Lines works mainly northern routes, and runs as far as the border districts of Chiang Khong and Mae Sai — destinations many operators do not reach.
Main routes: Bangkok – Chiang Mai, Bangkok – Chiang Rai, Bangkok – Chiang Khong and Bangkok – Lampang. Bangkok to Chiang Mai is about 700 km, roughly 9–11 hours; the Chiang Rai and Chiang Khong runs are longer again.
The company splits its service into 3 levels:
- VIP – top level, used on the long runs such as Chiang Khong and Thung Chang in Nan province
- Super – mid level, on Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang and Surat Thani
- Star – standard level, on Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai
VIP, Super and Star are the company's own trade names, not Department of Land Transport standard classes. Check the seat count and seat map on the booking page before you commit, since the same service name can be laid out differently on different routes.
One thing to know before you go: an online booking does not get you on the bus by itself. Stop at the Bangkok Bus Lines counter first and have the ticket issued.
Northern seats sell out weeks ahead over Songkran and New Year. Book early, and re-check your boarding point on the ticket before you travel.

What is the difference between Star, Super and VIP?
They are in-house service names, not government classes. The practical differences are seat count, layout and fare — Chiang Khong runs as VIP from 1,123 THB while Lampang runs as Super from 511 THB.
How long is Bangkok to Chiang Rai?
Between about 8h40m and 12 hours depending on the departure and number of stops, from 697 THB (checked August 2026).
Are there services to Mae Sai and Chiang Khong?
Yes, both border districts are served, along with Thung Chang in Nan province.
How do I book a ticket online?
Choose your origin, destination, travel date and number of passengers, then pick a departure and your seat. Enter each passenger name exactly as it appears on their ID or passport and pay with any supported method. Your E-Ticket is issued immediately after payment.
How far in advance can I book?
Most operators open sales 30-60 days ahead; the calendar only shows dates that are actually on sale. Seats sell out fast around Songkran and New Year, so book at least 3-4 weeks ahead for those periods.
What payment methods are accepted?
Thai QR / PromptPay, mobile banking, credit cards, debit cards, and counter payment at outlets such as Big C if you do not have a card.
Do I have to print the ticket?
No. After payment your E-Ticket appears on the website, in your email and in the app. Just show it on your phone at the boarding point.
How early should I arrive?
Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure so there is time for ticket checking and loading luggage. Roadside pick-up points have very short stops, so wait there in advance.
Can I change or refund a ticket?
You can manage your booking yourself from the Manage Booking menu. Conditions, deadlines and fees are set by each operator, not by the booking platform.
What should I bring on board?
A long-sleeved top or light blanket — the air conditioning runs cold — a phone charger or power bank, motion-sickness tablets on winding routes, and keep valuables with you rather than in the luggage hold.
