Erawan Waterfall

Sometimes, traveling doesn't require a complex destination. A pair of shoes, a small bag, and a getaway filled with green trees are more than enough. This time, we set off for 'Erawan Waterfall' in Kanchanaburi, a famous spot that many have probably heard of and definitely seen all over social media. However, once we arrived and experienced it for ourselves, we discovered that this place has so much more to offer than just the crystal-blue water we saw on our screens.
As soon as we stepped onto the trail of Erawan Waterfall, the first thing that caught our eye was the lush greenery surrounding the path. Both sides were filled with trees, big and small, spreading their canopy overhead as if trying to provide shade for visiting travelers. Gentle sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting patterned shadows on the ground like a natural art exhibition along the way. The further we walked, the more the surroundings and ambient sounds began to shift. Leaves rustled in the breeze, the air grew slightly cooler and more humid, and the distant sound of water crashing against rocks echoed. Before long, we reached the national park ticket booth, which served as the official starting point. Our adventure at Erawan National Park had officially begun.
They say the charm of Erawan Waterfall doesn't lie in the water alone, but rather in the story of the '7 Levels of Heaven' that gradually reveal themselves along the way. Throughout this 1,640-meter trail within Erawan National Park, just how true is the saying, 'The beauty of the waterfall increases with the altitude'? Today, we are going to find out the answer together.
The 1st Level of Heaven: 'Lai Khuen Rang' (Flowing Back to the Nest). The first tier might just be the beginning of the trail, but it is already filled with a refreshing atmosphere. Right now, the view before us is a stream of water gently flowing over rows of rocks before cascading into the pool below. Listening to the continuous sound of water crashing against stones creates a melody of nature that completely drowns out the chaos of the outside world. We couldn't help but pause and look for a moment, thinking to ourselves... if the first level is already this beautiful, what will the upper levels be like?
The 2nd Level of Heaven: 'Wang Macha' (The Fish Pool). This is one of the most popular spots at Erawan Waterfall, where many tourists come with the intention to relax. Some come to swim, some dip their feet in the cool water, while others take photos to capture the atmosphere. The sight of the waterfall cascading down the light-colored rocks forms a small water curtain before gathering into a wide pool below. Looking down into the water, we could see the Mahseer barb fish swimming around playfully. This is a spot where many people end up spending much longer than they originally planned, because the crystal-clear water, beautiful scenery, and shady atmosphere made us want to just linger and not rush anywhere else.
The 3rd Level of Heaven: 'Pha Nam Tok' (The Waterfall Cliff). The stream cascades down the rocky cliff before gathering into a clear, emerald-green pool below. The surrounding area remains filled with lush trees and the soothing shadiness of the forest. As we paused and stood listening for a moment, we could hear the water crashing against the rocks, the wind rustling through the leaves, and the ambient sounds of nature all around us. It was a moment that made us feel... the deeper we walk in, the more Erawan Waterfall gradually reveals its beauty, piece by piece.
The 4th Level of Heaven: 'Ok Phisuea' (The Butterfly's Breast). The first thing that caught our eye was two massive boulders with peculiarly rounded shapes. The water gently flows over and covers these rocks, creating a striking feature unique to this level—and this is likely where the name 'Ok Phisuea' comes from.
The 5th Level of Heaven: 'Buea Mai Long' (Never Boring). The waterfall cascades down low, multi-tiered rock formations, creating white streams that contrast beautifully with the bluish-green pools. It is a stunning sight that almost everyone feels compelled to capture in a photograph. The higher we climbed, the thinner the crowds became, making the serenity of the forest even more pronounced. We began to hear our own movements more clearly—our breathing, the thud of our shoes hitting the ground, and the rushing water nearby. Perhaps nature asks nothing of us at all; it simply invites us to slow down and connect with the wilderness surrounding us.
The 6th Level of Heaven: 'Dong Phrueksa' (The Forest of Flora). The waterfall area is enveloped by a vast variety of trees and plant species, giving this level an incredibly shady and untouched natural vibe. There are viewpoints and a wooden bridge designed for visitors to stroll along, taking in the views of both the flowing streams and the lush forest. We watched the water course through the rocks into the basin below. Although this level doesn't feature a prominent swimming area, it offers a sense of tranquility and a pristine natural vista that is hard to find anywhere else.
The 7th Level of Heaven: 'Phu Pha Erawan' (Erawan's Cliff). And finally... we made it to the final tier, Phu Pha Erawan. Right in front of us is a stream of water cascading down a massive cliff, gathering into a clear, emerald-green pool. Most importantly, the upper rock formations bear a striking resemblance to an elephant's head, which is the actual origin of the name 'Erawan.' Standing there, we truly felt the weight of the saying, 'The beauty of the waterfall increases with the altitude.' It is as true as everyone says; this place is so breathtaking that all our fatigue simply washed away. Walking up tier by tier until reaching 'Phu Pha Erawan' was absolutely worth every single step.
From the starting point, where we bought our tickets with a casual thought of 'just taking a look at a waterfall,' we passed the sound of cascading waters tier after tier, inhaled the scent of earth and wild forests, and felt the cool breeze. We pushed through sweat and the physical exhaustion of hiking uphill. In the end, we found ourselves standing before a flow of water so jaw-droppingly beautiful that we couldn't take our eyes off it. Perhaps the joy of traveling does not lie solely in reaching the final destination, but in every single step we take along the way. From the 1st to the 7th tier, Erawan Waterfall offers much more than just streams to admire; it encompasses sounds, scents, coolness, the vibrant green of the forest, and the subtle emotions that gradually stir inside us during the journey. If you ever have the chance to visit Kanchanaburi, I highly recommend throwing on a pair of comfortable shoes and following the sound of the stream inside for yourself. Because sometimes... the most beautiful destination is simply the path where we spend the most time immersing ourselves in nature.
