Khao Na Nai Luang
Where Faith is Embraced by the Mountains
When someone invites us to visit Surat Thani, many might instantly think of the sea, tropical islands, or Ratchaprapha Dam. However, nestled amidst the lush forests and towering valleys of Phanom District lies a destination we truly wish to invite everyone to experience firsthand: 'Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park.' This is a sanctuary where deep faith and raw nature live in perfect harmony, a place famous for the iconic sight of white pagodas perched majestically atop mountain peaks, looking as if they are floating high above the vibrant green forest.

As we arrive at Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park, our very first sight is the massive limestone mountains enveloping the vast area. The atmosphere here changes instantly from the roads we just left behind; the sounds of traffic gradually fade away, replaced only by the whispering wind, rustling leaves, and the gentle rhythms of nature. The closer we walk toward the entrance, the more our mindset shifts from mere sightseeing to stepping into a sanctuary filled with deep peace and devotion. Visiting here is not just about driving up, taking a few quick photos, and leaving. Instead, it is a journey where nature slowly leads us away from the chaos of the outside world, drawing us into a quieter state of mind step by step. One iconic sight that no one should miss is the 'Buddhavadi 9-Spire Arch.' This beautifully crafted brown gateway stands gracefully against the mountain backdrop, serving as a portal between the outside world and this spiritual realm. If you visit in the early morning, you will witness the soft golden sunlight piercing through the arches, creating stunning shadows and dimensions—making it a legendary photo spot that everyone must capture before going home.

From the Buddhavadi 9-Spire Arch, we slowly make our way up the stairs, step by step. Both sides of the path are surrounded by trees of all sizes and small wildlife, allowing us to observe and marvel at the rich, thriving ecosystem. During the initial stretch, we don't feel too tired, but as the trail becomes steeper and higher, we feel an escalating sense of being deep in the mountains. The wind carries the fresh scent of trees and earth to our senses, leaves sway in the breeze, and the faint calls of birds echo from afar. Whenever we pause for a breath and look back down, a wider view of the vast forest begins to unfold. It is at this exact moment that we realize hiking up a mountain isn't just about reaching the peak at the top—the path along the way is just as much a part of the journey. The more we slow down our pace, the more we notice the tiny, beautiful details of the forest that we might have completely overlooked while driving past.

Finally, we have made our way up to one of the ultimate highlights of this dharma park: the Phra Phuttha Silawadi Floating Pagoda. Perched atop a limestone peak, this pagoda had already captivated us when we looked up from below. Seeing it from the ground, the pagoda appears as if it is floating in mid-air. This is especially true when a thick blanket of mist covers the valley below, making the structure stand out majestically, looking as though it is resting on fluffy clouds and surrounded by lush, emerald hills. Inside, the pagoda enshrines sacred Buddha relics, making it a vital place for worship and reflection on the virtues of the Buddha. Reaching this summit, paying our respects to the relics, and gazing out at the panoramic view, our physical exhaustion is gently replaced by a deep sense of inner peace. Perhaps, sometimes a journey requires nothing more than stepping away from the daily rush and fully immersing oneself in the present moment.

Once you have paid your respects to the Buddha relics and admired the floating pagoda, don't rush back just yet! Another adorable highlight waiting to greet you is the resident deer. You can buy some treats and slowly walk up to them; some are so friendly they might even stroll right over to welcome you without being called. The atmosphere is filled with pure joy and warmth. Feeding them while looking into their bright, innocent eyes is a simple yet heartwarming way to wrap up our trip to Khao Na Nai Luang, leaving a big smile on our faces. We didn't miss the chance to capture this sweet little moment. After all, sometimes the best memories of a journey aren't found at the mountain peaks, but right here with the four-legged locals we stop to greet before heading home.
